You have two quotes open. One is lower, and you can't tell whether it's actually cheaper, because the two documents describe different things: one is a room, and the other is a room plus half a dozen line items you haven't priced yet. It's the most common frustration with Chicago event venue pricing, and about ten minutes with the right questions fixes it. Here's what comes with our rooms, what's quoted separately, and how to line up any two quotes so the comparison means something.

Why a low number tends to grow

A venue fee can be quoted two ways. It can be the price of the room, with everything else arriving later as separate line items, or it can be a flat number that already contains the things you'd otherwise be billed for.

Both are fair ways to quote. The first is simply easier to make look small, and the number that wins the shortlist in March often turns out to be a different number from the one anyone pays in September. So before you compare two quotes, make sure they describe the same night.

What comes with the room

The venue fee covers the room for your rental window. The bar is its own package, and its price covers the alcohol, mixers, tax and bartenders. The same approach applies at Rockwell on the River, Skyline Loft, Sculpture Garden Gallery and Amazing Space, so if you've been trying to work out what a Rockwell on the River wedding costs, or what comes with Skyline Loft, the answer starts in the same place.

Here's what comes with the room:

  • Furniture: tables, chairs, bar structures and draping. Counts vary by venue. Rockwell on the River, for example, comes with 250 chairs and 25 dining tables.

  • Climate control: heat and air conditioning at every venue.

  • WiFi: free throughout.

  • Venue staff: a facility representative and building staff at every venue, plus an elevator attendant at Skyline Loft.

  • Coat check: dedicated coat rooms at Skyline Loft and Sculpture Garden Gallery, staffed by your caterer, and racks at Rockwell on the River and Amazing Space.

  • Stage: Amazing Space has one built in.

Every venue is wheelchair accessible. Skyline Loft and Sculpture Garden Gallery share a free parking lot, and Amazing Space has parking in the building.

What's quoted separately, and why

Three things sit outside the venue fee. We'd rather you read about them here than find out on a call.

  • Catering: from our approved vendor list. We don't run an in-house kitchen, so you choose the caterer and the menu, and catering arrives as its own quote.

  • Bar: Venue Logic is the exclusive beverage provider at every venue we manage, and the bar has its own quote. More on that below.

  • Production: drapery, AV, lighting, hanging decor and any furniture beyond what's included go through our exclusive production partners. Tabletop decor, from florals to candles to place settings, is yours to choose and source.

Extra hours beyond your rental window are priced separately too. You'll see every one of these numbers before you sign anything.

The bar, priced before you ask

Bar is where event budgets most often move, so we built a tool for it. The CraftBar Calculator lets you price your own bar against your headcount and the package you want, in a few minutes and without waiting on a quote.

CraftBar package price covers the alcohol, mixers, tax and bartenders in one number, so the figure you see is the figure you pay for the bar. You can compare every level on our bar packages page, and each one is built around freshly squeezed juices, small-batch spirits and locally sourced ingredients.

Our bartenders are BASSET-certified through the Illinois Liquor Control Commission, and we carry dram shop insurance on every event we run. Most people never think to ask a venue about that until something goes wrong.

Your hours are part of the price

Rental windows are easy to skim past and expensive to get wrong, because setup time you don't have turns into overtime you pay for.

  • Rockwell on the River: 6 hours of setup, 6 hours of event, 2 hours of breakdown

  • Bridgeport Art Center (Skyline Loft and Sculpture Garden Gallery): 4 hours of setup, 6 hours of event, 2 hours of breakdown

Events can run until 2am at every venue. If you're planning a heavy install, like a full production build or a complicated floral plan, compare setup windows across quotes before you compare event hours. Two venues with identical event times can differ by two hours of load-in, and that gap has a price.

How to compare two quotes in ten minutes

Put both quotes side by side and write the same six questions across the top:

  • Is the fee flat, or do tax and service charges get added?

  • What furniture is already in the room?

  • Who supplies staff, and which staff?

  • How many hours of setup do you get?

  • Is the bar exclusive, and what does it cost per guest at your headcount?

  • What has to go through a required vendor?

Fill in both columns and the cheaper quote will often change. Sometimes it's still the cheaper one, which is a fine answer, and now it's one you can trust. It also helps to know what a reception venue typically costs before you start, so you have a benchmark to hold the numbers against.

If you're a planner pricing a company event, our corporate events page has the specs for every room in one place. And for what it's worth, we'd rather lose a booking to a venue that fits you better than win one with a number that grows after you sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is the venue fee quoted?

The venue fee covers the room for your rental window, and you'll see every line before you sign. The CraftBar package is quoted on its own, and its price covers the alcohol, mixers, tax and bartenders in one number.

Q: What comes with the room?

Tables, chairs, bar structures and draping, in quantities that vary by venue. Heat and air conditioning at every space, free WiFi, coat check facilities and venue staff, including an elevator attendant at Skyline Loft. Amazing Space also has a stage.

Q: What is quoted separately?

Catering, bar, and production work such as drapery, AV, extra furniture, lighting and hanging decor. Additional hours beyond your rental window are priced separately too. You'll see all of it before you sign.

Q: Can we bring our own alcohol or bartenders?

No. Venue Logic is the exclusive beverage provider at every venue we manage. Our bartenders are BASSET-certified through the Illinois Liquor Control Commission, and we carry dram shop insurance on every event we run. You can price your own bar in a few minutes with the CraftBar Calculator.

Q: How many hours does the rental cover?

Rockwell on the River gives you 6 hours of setup, 6 hours of event and 2 hours of breakdown. Bridgeport Art Center, which houses Skyline Loft and Sculpture Garden Gallery, gives you 4 hours of setup, 6 hours of event and 2 hours of breakdown. Events can run until 2am, and extra time is available for a fee.

Q: Do we need to hire a planner?

It isn't required, but we recommend a planner or at least a day-of coordinator. We don't sell planning ourselves, so this is simply what we've seen: the events that run smoothly have someone whose only job is the timeline.

Come see the rooms

Numbers are easier to trust once you've stood in the room. We give tours Monday through Saturday by appointment, and we would love to walk you through how the room and the bar are priced while you're there.

Please feel free to set up a tour, or price your bar yourself first with the CraftBar Calculator. You can also see our venues side by side if you're still narrowing the list.
